Does your car need a brakes replacement? When we replace the brakes on a car, we rarely have to replace the entire brake system. The two most common components that we have to replace are the brake pads and the rotors. Rotors will last longer than brake pads, but they still need to be replaced periodically. At Erick’s Custom Exhaust & Auto Repair, we want you to have all the knowledge you need to keep your car on the road.
Been a while since you replaced your brake pads or rotors? Here are 4 signs your car needs a brakes replacement.
Squeaking, Squealing, or Grinding Noises
We’ve all had the experience of braking at a stoplight and worrying that those squeaking brakes belong to your car. When brake pads start to wear down, they make a high-pitched squeal or squeaking noise as they come in contact with the rotors. As they wear down further, they will start to grind rather than squeak.
Vibrations When Braking
Does your car shake when you engage the brakes? That’s usually a sign that the rotors are no longer smooth. The rotors are metal, so if they get too hot or too thin (or both), they warp. When the brake pads press against the rotors, they vibrate, and you can feel it through the brake pedal.
Longer Stop Time
You shouldn’t have to stand on your brake pedal to bring your car to a stop. If your car takes longer to come to a stop than it should, that’s a sign that your brake pads are completely worn down. It can also indicate that your brake fluid is low, possibly due to a leak. Look at where you normally park your car to see if there are any puddles or stains that shouldn’t be there.
Thin Brake Pads
The easiest way to check if your brake pads are worn down is to visually inspect them. Look between the spokes of your wheels to find the brake pads. If they appear to be less than ¼ inch thick, it’s time for a brakes replacement. If you’re not confident that you can check them yourself, come to Erick’s and we’ll do it for you.
